El empleo de la gasolina en nuestro país se remonta a principios del siglo pasado, dado que Ford Motor Company inició la producción en serie de vehículos en México.
Con la expropiación del crudo, Petróleos Mexicanos comenzó a vender un producto denominado como "Gasolina" con solo 57 octanos. Después de 10 años, lanzo al mercado Mexolina, mej0rando el octanaje de 57 a 70 octanos.
En 1956, se introdujo Gasolmex de 90 octanos por la llegada de nuevos motores. en la época de los Muscle Cars (sesentas) se tuvieron que producir dos nuevas gasolinas de alto octanaje:
La Novacon de 81 octanos y la Extra de 94.
En 1987 disminuyó en tetraetilo de plomo de las gasolinas a 0.78 ml/gl en la gasolina Nova y se le añadio un detergente que provocaba la disminución de las emisiones de monoxido de carbono e hidrocarburos no quemados.
En los noventa se creo el primer combustible libre de plomo denominado Magna Sin
